Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on Thursday affirmed that he has secured enough votes to confirm Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court.

“We have the votes,” McConnell told reporters in Kentucky after taking part in early voting for the presidential election, according to Bloomberg News. The Kentucky Republican predicted that the Senate Judiciary Committee will approve Barrett’s nomination on October 22, clearing the way for a full Senate vote the following day.

Earlier Thursday, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-SC) officially scheduled a panel vote for Barrett’s nomination for next Thursday at 1:00 P.M.

“It’s clear to me from reading in the paper is that what’s going to happen is we’re going to be denied the ability to operate as normal… I know what awaits us,” Graham stated.

A slate of witnesses are scheduled to testify before a Senate panel Thursday on the fourth and final day of confirmation hearings for Barrett.

The witness testimony follows three days of Barrett appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, where members questioned the appellate judge on topics including abortion, voting rights, the Affordable Care Act and legal matters involving President Donald Trump.

Sen. Kamala Harris’s (D-CA) failed presidential campaign received contributions from a law firm used by deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, according to July 2019 report.

The Associated Press reported:

Kamala Harris bemoaned the influence of the powerful and connected elite last Tuesday when she called on top Justice Department officials to recuse themselves from any matter related to Jeffrey Epstein. She said their former law firm’s work on behalf of the financier accused of sexual abuse “calls into question the integrity of our legal system.” Yet the same day, Harris’ husband headlined a Chicago fundraiser for her presidential campaign that was hosted by six partners of that firm — Kirkland and Ellis, according to an invitation obtained by The Associated Press.

[…]

Harris, a California senator and Democratic presidential candidate, was one of several White House hopefuls to blast the handling of Epstein’s case in Florida a decade ago, when his lawyers negotiated a deal with federal prosecutors that allowed him to avoid the possibility of years in prison.

In 2008, former Trump Labor Secretary Alex Acosta met with Kirkland and Ellis lawyers in his capacity as U.S. attorney in Miami and cut an agreement that let Epstein only serve 13 months in prison.

Despite the connection to Epstein, then-Harris spokesman Ian Sams dismissed concerns about taking money from law firm partners that were uninvolved with Epstein’s plea deal.

“The people involved in that case have not supported her campaign, and she wouldn’t want that support anyway,” Sams argued to the AP at the time.

However, one attorney believes any campaign connection to the firm is unacceptable.

“If any connection with Kirkland and Ellis is a stain on (senior Justice Department officials), why isn’t a connection with the law firm for the receipt of campaign contributions a stain on her own campaign?” said Common Cause lawyer Paul Ryan.

In August 2019, Epstein was found dead in his New York City jail cell where he was being held on sex trafficking and abuse charges. His alleged madam — British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell — was arrested in early July on charges of enticing minors to engage in sexual activities.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) on Wednesday seemingly endorsed fellow “Squad” member Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) radical call for “dismantling the whole system of oppression” in the United States.

“My sister @IlhanMN said it best: We must begin with dismantling the whole system of oppression wherever we find it,” Tlaib wrote on Twitter. “Pass it on.”

During a Tuesday press conference addressing “systemic racism,” Omar called for dismantling economic and political institutions beyond just law enforcement.

“The mortality rate for black Minnesotans to COVID is twice as high as it is with other races. And for me, this is very personal because I lost my own father to the coronavirus,” Omar began. “I see the pain and the havoc it is wreaking on the black community in Minneapolis.”

“We must recognize that these systems of oppression are linked,” the Minnesota Democrat continued. “As long as our economy and political systems prioritize profit without considering who is profiting, who is being shut out, we will perpetuate this inequity. So we cannot stop at the criminal justice system.”

“We must begin the work of dismantling the whole system of oppression wherever we find it,” she concluded.

Omar recently expressed support for the Minneapolis City Council voting to defund its police department.

“You can’t really reform a department that is rotten to the root. What you can do is rebuild,” she told CNN State of the Union host Jake Tapper. “This is our opportunity, you know, as a city, to come together, have the conversation of what public safety looks like, who enforces the most dangerous crimes that take place in our community.”

Minneapolis is still reeling from protests and riots that led to a police precinct building being set ablaze in response to the death of George Floyd, a black man who died in police custody.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey (D), though highly critical of the city’s police, has refused to join calls for its abolishment.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, testified Tuesday that an emerging virus found in pigs in China shares traits with the 2009 Swine Flu and 1918 Pandemic Flu, and U.S. public health officials are monitoring the disease.

Fauci, a White House coronavirus task force member, explained before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee that the virus — known as “G4 EA H1N1,” — doesn’t appear to infect humans, however, it has shown “reassortment capabilities.”

“In other words, when you get a brand new virus that turns out to be a pandemic virus it’s either due to mutations and/or the reassortment or exchanges of genes,” he stated. “And they’re seeing virus in swine, in pigs now, that have characteristics of the 2009 H1N1, of the original 1918, which many of our flu viruses have remnants of that in it, as well as segments from other hosts like swine.”

Fauci warned lawmakers of the “possibility that you might have another swine flu type outbreak as we had in 2009.”

“It’s something that still is in the stage of examination,” he added.

During another part of his testimony, Fauci expressed that he is “quite concerned” regarding the recent surge in Chinese coronavirus cases, blaming states for possibly reopening too soon and some Americans ignoring guidelines to stop the virus’ spread.

“We have got to get that message out that we are all in this together,” he said. “If we are going to contain this, we’ve got to contain it together.”

Federal and state officials have also blamed the surges on younger people failing to take precautions, like face masks and distancing in public.

Also appearing before the panel Tuesday was Robert Redfield, director of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention; Stephen Hahn, commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration; and Brett Giroir, assistant secretary of the Health and Human Services Department.

Concerning the recent increases, Redfield said it’s “imperative” that Americans take personal responsibility in employing preventative measures to stop the virus’ spread.

“Specifically, I’m addressing the younger members of our society, the millennials and the ‘Generation Zs,’” he said.

“I ask those that are listening to spread the word,” he added, urging younger people to “embrace the universal use of face coverings.”

A complaint filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on Wednesday alleges freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) illegally used campaign money to help carry on an extramarital affair with a Democrat consultant whose firm she paid tens of thousands of dollars.

Federal campaign finance records show that Omar’s campaign has paid nearly $230,000 since 2018 to the E. Street Group, a political strategy firm of which the lawmaker’s alleged married lover, Tim Mynett, is a partner of. On Tuesday, Mynett’s wife, Dr. Beth Jordan Mynett, filed for divorce in a D.C.-area court, alleging her spouse confessed to having an affair with Omar in April, the same month FEC documents show that the lawmaker’s campaign began issuing payments to E. Street Group for “travel expenses.” According to FEC filings, the Minnesota Democrat campaign made eight payments totaling $21,547 to E. Street Group for travel costs between April and June. The divorce filings, first reported by the New York Post, also states Tim Mynett made a “shocking declaration of love” for the Minnesota Democrat to his wife and left her soon after.

The National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC), the right-leaning non-profit group behind the complaint against Omar, alleges the timelines of the affair and travel payments overlap. As per FEC guidelines, lawmakers are forbidden from using campaign money for personal travel expenses unless the candidate pays the money back using their personal funds.

“If Ilhan for Congress reimbursed Mynett’s LLC for travel so that Rep. Omar would have the benefit of Mynett’s romantic companionship, the expenditures must be considered personal in nature,” NLPC’s complaint reads.

“Rep. Omar’s filings do not reveal subsequent reimbursements for Mynett’s travel,” the complaint added.

The complaint was first reported by the Daily Caller.

The development follows after a Daily Mail report stating Omar no longer lives with her husband, Ahmed Hirsi, who once worked as a senior policy advisor for her. The far-left “Squad” member has been dogged by allegations that she committed U.S. immigration fraud by marrying another man, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, who is accused of being her brother. Omar has repeatedly denied the claim.

According to marriage records, Omar applied for a license in 2002 to marry Hirsi, who Omar says went by Ahmed Abdisalan Aden at the time. A marriage certificate was not issued and Omar has said they did not pursue a civil marriage but instead married in their Muslim faith tradition. Omar and Hirsi had two children but ended their relationship in 2008.

Omar then married Elmi, who she said is a British citizen, in 2009, according to a marriage certificate. Omar said that relationship ended in 2011 and the two divorced in their faith tradition, but Omar did not take legal action to divorce him until 2017. Divorce records say Omar and Hirsi reunited and had a third child together in June 2012. Omar legally married Hirsi in early 2018, a month after her divorce from Elmi was finalized.

In an interview with WCCO, Omar denied claims that she had an affair with Mynett and refused to address any aspect of her personal life.

“Are you separated from your husband? Are you dating somebody?” WCCO reporter Esme Murphy asked Omar.

“No, I am not,” she replied, before adding, “As I said yesterday, I have no interest in allowing the conversation about my personal life to continue and so I have no desire to discuss it.”

Wednesday’s complaint by the NLPC is not the first time Omar has found herself on the wrong side of campaign finance law.

Last year, a Republican state representative accused Omar of misusing campaign funds, alleging among other things that she used $2,250 in campaign money to pay a lawyer for her divorce proceedings. The campaign finance board investigated and found she didn’t use the funds to pay for a divorce lawyer as alleged, but other irregularities were found. The board’s final report said “there was an issue with her tax returns that needed to be corrected” and that some campaign funds went to an accounting firm.

State officials ruled earlier this year that Omar must repay her campaign committee nearly $3,500, including $1,500 for payments made to the accounting firm for services related to joint tax returns for 2014 and 2015. Omar had to pay a $500 penalty to the state.

CNN has hired fired FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe as a contributor, the network announced Friday morning.

McCabe was fired by then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions on March 16th, 2018, less than two days before the veteran FBI official was slated to retire. According to the Department of Justice, “McCabe had made an unauthorized disclosure to the news media and lacked candor — including under oath — on multiple occasions.”

The firing was recommended by the FBI’s discipline office after the Justice Department’s inspector general investigation determined McCabe had authorized FBI officials to disclose sensitive information to the media regarding an investigation related to Hillary Clinton and subsequently lied investigators about his role in the matter.

A criminal investigation into whether McCabe made false statements during an internal probe into his media disclosures remains ongoing, his attorney Michael Bromwich has said.

Earlier this month, McCabe sued the FBI and DOJ over his termination, alleging his ouster was “legal nullity.”

In his 48-page complaint, the fired FBI official alleges that the Trump administration “responded to Plaintiff’s two decades of unblemished and non-partisan public service with a politically motivated and retaliatory demotion in January 2018 and public firing in March 2018 — on the very night of Plaintiff’s long-planned retirement from the FBI.”

Further, McCabe alleges President Trump “purposefully and intentionally caused the unlawful actions of Defendants … and other Executive Branch subordinates that led to Plaintiff’s demotion and purported termination.”

“It was Trump’s unconstitutional plan and scheme to discredit and remove DOJ and FBI employees who were deemed to be his partisan opponents because they were not politically loyal to him. Plaintiff’s termination was a critical element of Trump’s plan and scheme,” reads the complaint.

McCabe has asked a judge to rule that “his demotion was unlawful and his purported termination was either a legal nullity,” or ensure he receives the retirement benefits he was expected to receive upon retirement.

His lawsuit came two days after former FBI agent Peter Strzok sued the FBI and the DOJ over his own termination, alleging his firing was “politically-driven and illegal.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) falsely claimed Wednesday that Democrats have “never” denied that there is a “crisis” on the U.S.-Mexico border — a statement directly contradicted by the words of multiple party leaders just months ago.

“Well, let me just say this. We have never not said that there was a crisis — there is a humanitarian crisis at the border, and some of it provoked by the actions taken by the administration,” Pelosi stated during her weekly press conference in the Capitol Visitor Center on Wednesday.

“What is happening at the border is tragic and we hope to address some of that in the disaster supplemental,” the California Democrat added. “And we understand our responsibility to secure our border.”

Pelosi’s remarks bear a stark contrast to what the House Speaker and other Democrats have previously said about the situation at the border, referring to it as a “manufactured crisis” by President Donald Trump.

During a joint press conference in January, Pelosi and Senate Minorite Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) accused the president of using the “backdrop of the Oval Office to manufacture a crisis, stoke fear, and divert attention.”

Further, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said of the situation at the Southern border after a visit to El Paso, Texas: “The first, most dramatic thing we found was there is no crisis.”

President Trump signed a congressional bill to avert a second partial government shutdown and declared a national emergency to build a wall along the border after Democrats used to back the funding required for its construction. The president also declared a national emergency at the southern border and used his executive authority to go around Congress to obtain more money to build the security barrier. “The current situation at the southern border presents a border security and humanitarian crisis that threatens core national security interests and constitutes a national emergency,” he said at the time.

Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security said earlier this month that illegal border crossing surged to a decade-high in April with nearly 100,000 crossers arrested.

Senator and 2020 Democrat presidential candidate Cory Booker (NJ) announced Monday he plans to introduce legislation that would form a commission to study reparations for black Americans.

“This bill is a way of addressing head-on the persistence of racism, white supremacy, and implicit racial bias in our country,” a statement via Booker reads. “It will bring together the best minds to study the issue and propose solutions that will finally begin to right the economic scales of past harms and make sure we are a country where all dignity and humanity is affirmed.”

According to The Hill, a Booker spokesperson said the bill would create a commission aimed at analyzing the “impact of slavery and continuing discrimination against African-Americans.” The body would be tasked with providing recommendations for those who are descendants of slaves. The New Jersey Democrat will unveil the bill’s text “shortly,” the lawmaker’s office said.

“I am pleased that Senator Booker has introduced a Senate Companion to H.R. 40. I salute his dedication to elevating the discussion of reparations and reparatory justice, and look forward to the dialogue that this issue engenders on and off Capitol Hill,” Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), who introduced similar legislation in the House, said Monday.

Booker’s announcement follows Al Sharpton’s National Action Network convention, during which several other 2020 Democrat White House hopefuls expressed support for creating a commission to study reparations.

Former Rep. Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke (D-TX) told conference attendees he supports the idea, declaring, “absolutely I would sign that into law.”

Later, in an interview with Equal Justice Initiative executive director Brian Stevenson, O’Rourke said he believes the word “repair” is foundational to reparations. “Until all Americans understand that civil rights” also involves “the injustices that have been visited and continue to be visited on people, we will never get the change that we need to live up to the promise of this country. So absolutely I would sign that into law,” said the Texas Democrat.

Former HUD Secretary Julian Castro, who is the most supportive candidate of reparations, said Wednesday that he believes the United States “will never truly heal until we address the original sin of slavery.”

Sens. Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) also told Sharpton that they back the measure if elected president.

However, not all high-profile Democrats agree on how to address the issue of reparations.

In a recent sit-down with the Post and Courier, House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC), the highest-ranking African-American member of Congress, dismissed the proposal, saying “pure” reparations are “impossible to implement.”

Clyburn, largely seen as a 2020 kingmaker of sorts in South Carolina, has long advocated for the “10-20-30” policy to solve poverty in different parts of the country. The policy would direct ten percent of federal funds to counties containing at least 20 percent living below the poverty line in the last 30 years. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), another 2020 presidential contender, has endorsed the South Carolina Democrat’s proposal.
