Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) held a press conference Thursday after it was revealed that federal authorities arrested several men allegedly involved in a plot to kidnap her and overthrow the state government.

The governor took the opportunity to accuse President Donald Trump of being “complicit” with “hate groups” such as the suspects accused of plotting to abduct her.

What are the details?

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Western District of Michigan announced the arrest of 16 people earlier in the day, who were allegedly involved in conspiring to kidnap Whitmer at her vacation home.

According to the Department of Justice’s news release, suspects involved “conducted coordinated surveillance” on Whitmer’s vacation house, and one “even inspected the underside of an M-31 highway bridge for places to seat an explosive” in order to distract the police while carrying out their plan. They also allegedly discussed purchasing a TASER to use during the abduction.

Whitmer responded by first expressing her gratitude to law enforcement for stopping the plot, before taking aim at Trump over the ordeal in an attempt to link his rhetoric to the alleged crime.

According to the Chicago Tribune, “There’s no indication in the criminal complaint that the men arrested were inspired by Trump. Authorities also have not publicly said whether the men were angry about Whitmer’s coronavirus orders, which sharply curtailed businesses and individuals in an effort to slow the spread of the [corona]virus.”

As the public awaits further details about the motive behind the alleged plot, footage has emerged of one suspect, Brandon Caserta, lambasting President Trump as “a tyrant” and “enemy” while he sits in a room with an anarchist flag in the background.

Nonetheless, Whitmer during her press conference pointed to last week’s presidential debate where the president told the Proud Boys — who claim they condemn white supremacy — to “stand back and stand by.” The governor said that Trump “refused to condemn white supremacists and hate groups like these two Michigan militia groups.”

“Hate groups heard the president’s words not as a rebuke, but as a rallying cry,” she continued. “When our leaders speak, their words matter. They carry weight. When our leaders meet, encourage or fraternize with domestic terrorists, they legitimize their actions and they are complicit. When they stoke and contribute to hate speech, they are complicit.”

In response to Whitmer’s remarks, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said, “”President Trump has continually condemned white supremacists and all forms of hate. Governor Whitmer is sowing division by making these outlandish allegations. America stands united against hate and in support of our federal law enforcement who stopped this plot.”

Anything else?
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel (D) also attacked Trump when she was asked by CNN anchor Anderson Cooper what her message was to Americans following the arrests of the suspects.

Nessel’s conclusion was, “We can no longer afford in this nation to have our elected leaders like the president of the United States sending not just winks and nods — and I hear it frequently called a dog whistle. It’s not a dog whistle to these folks, it’s literally a command to action for domestic terrorists.”

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva called out NBA superstar and Black Lives Matter supporter LeBron James on Monday, challenging the Los Angles Lakers star to match and double the reward for bringing to justice the suspect who ambushed two deputies in Compton over the weekend.

What are the details?

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person seen on surveillance video shooting two deputies sitting in their patrol car on Saturday night. Another $75,000 has been added to the reward from private donors.

During an interview with KABC-AM, Villanueva declared, “This challenge is to LeBron James: I want you to match that and double that reward,” according to Fox News.

“I know you care about law enforcement,” the sheriff continued. “You expressed a very interesting statement about your perspective on race relations and on officer-involved shootings and the impact that it has on the African American community, and I appreciate that. But likewise, we need to appreciate that respect for life goes across all professions.”

Villanueva added, “Let’s see what he does. I’ll be very curious to see what his response is, if any.”

What did LeBron James say?

James has been an outspoken critic of law enforcement in the wake of the death of George Floyd, who died while in police custody in Minneapolis in late May after an officer was seen on camera kneeling on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes.

Following the shooting of Jacob Blake — who became engaged in a scuffle with officers after they sought to apprehend him over allegations of sexual assault in Kenosha, Wisconsin, last month — James tweeted, “And y’all wonder why we say what we say about the Police!! Someone please tell me WTF is this???!!! Exactly another black man being targeted. This s**t is so wrong and so sad!! Feel so sorry for him, his family and OUR PEOPLE!! We want JUSTICE.”

Later that day, James told reporters, “We are scared as black people in America. Black men, black women, black kids. We are, we are terrified.”

James has thus far been silent over the shooting of the two deputies in Compton, who remain hospitalized because of their injuries.

According to an earlier report from TheBlaze, the sheriff’s department said:

The suspect is described as a black male whose age is estimated to be between 28 and 30. He was wearing dark clothes in the now widely circulated surveillance video. Unfortunately, the low quality of that video makes further description of the suspect virtually impossible at this time.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) insists she is not to blame after getting caught violating multiple San Francisco coronavirus restrictions by having her hair done in a shuttered salon earlier this week amid the city’s lockdown, saying she was “set up” by the salon and that they owe her an apology rather than the other way around.

What are the details?

Pelosi was hit with waves of criticism on Tuesday after Fox News reported that her assistant asked a stylist to provide hair services to the speaker in eSalon the day before — despite the establishment being closed for months just like all the other salons in the city to due coronavirus orders.

The outlet published security camera footage provided by the owner, Erica Kious, showing a mask-less Pelosi strolling through the salon, as well as text messages claiming Pelosi’s assistant made the request to a stylist who rents space from Kious at eSalon.

Kious called Pelosi’s actions a “slap in the face” considering the business owner hasn’t been able to open her salon in months while Pelosi “feels that she can just go and get her stuff done while no one else can go in, and I can’t work.”

But Pelosi insisted Wednesday that she is the one who was wronged in the incident, telling reporters during a press conference, “I take responsibility for trusting the word of the neighborhood salon that I’ve been to over the years many times. And that when they said ‘We’re able to accommodate people one person at a time’ and that we can set up that time, I trusted that. As it turns out, it was a set-up, so I take responsibility for falling for a set-up.”

“I think that this salon owes me an apology, for setting [me] up,” the speaker said.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle:

As for the short clip showing her mask around her neck [Pelosi said]: “I just had my hair washed. I don’t wear a mask when I’m washing my hair. Do you wear a mask when you’re washing your hair? I always wear a mask … And that picture is when I just came out of the bowl.”

As The Hill pointed out, “San Francisco’s guidelines state that ‘any service that requires your customer to remove their face covering are not permitted at this time.'”

Salons in San Francisco were just allowed to reopen for business on Tuesday, and are still restricted to only providing services outdoors, Politico reported.

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum announced it will not put on its annual “Tribute in Light” memorial display this year, saying the health risks to the workers who would install the lights would be “far too great” because of COVID-19.

The museum stated on its website:

Tribute in Light, the world’s beloved twin beams of light, will not shine over lower Manhattan as part of this year’s 9/11 commemoration. This incredibly difficult decision was reached in consultation with our partners after concluding the health risks during the pandemic were far too great for the large crew required to produce the annual Tribute in Light. We hope to resume this iconic tribute for the 20th anniversary. In a spirit of unity and remembrance, the city will come together for a “Tribute in Lights” initiative to inspire the world and honor the promise to never forget.
Instead of the massive light beams shining symbolically where the Twin Towers once stood, the museum said “many iconic New York City buildings will be lighting their spires and facades in blue to honor those killed on 9/11.”

Folks on social media expressed outrage over the decision.

Conservative talk show host Larry O’Connor tweeted, “Give me a f*****g break! There was no fear for the workers used to paint a BLM mural at Trump Tower! NYC makes their priorities known. Duly noted.”

Someone else wrote, “So much for ‘never forget,'” while another replied, “It takes about 40 people to set up those lights. I would volunteer without hesitation to do this. I’m sure thousands would. Do not make the sky over Manhattan be dark. We need the light.”

One person pointed out, “NYC schools will be opening in September 9th, 9/11 Light Installation cancelled over COVID 19 fear. Do you see who is the @NYCMayor?”

“Call it a protest,” somebody suggested.

“First, they cancelled the reading of names. Now they can’t even put the lights up in commemoration,” another person tweeted. “This is completely dishonorable and disgraceful. I’m ashamed to be from this city right now.”

According to the New York Post, the museum had already “scrapped the in-person reading of 9/11 victims at the annual Ground Zero ceremony.”

However, the outlet noted, “last week, a nonprofit, The Tunnel to Towers Foundation, announced their own separate Lower Manhattan ceremony where select family members of 9/11 victims will be permitted to read the names of their loved ones.”

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti (D) announced Wednesday night that by the end of the week, the city will start cutting off water and electric services to homes and businesses caught holding unauthorized large gatherings in violation of COVID-19 restrictions.

The mayor says he wants offenders shut down “permanently.”

What are the details?

“Recently we’ve seen the reports of some large parties and gatherings in flagrant violation of health ordinances,” Garcetti said during a press conference. “As our county Department of Public Health said yesterday, and I quote, ‘The highest risk settings are large, in-person gatherings where it is difficult for individuals to remain spaced at least six feet apart and where face coverings are not worn.”

Democratic politicians and leftists on Twitter are rallying to boycott Hispanic-owned food-maker Goya, after the company’s CEO heaped praise on President Donald Trump.

What are the details?

During a speech in the White House Rose Garden following a roundtable for Hispanic businesses and leaders on Thursday, Goya CEO Robert Unanue said, “We’re all truly blessed at the same time to have a leader like President Trump, who is a builder.”

He added, “We have an incredible builder. And we pray. We pray for our leadership, our president, and we pray for our country — that we will continue to prosper and grow.”

NPR reported that “Unanue, a third-generation Spanish American, enraged many with his remarks, including some high-profile Democrats, who also signaled that they would no longer support Goya’s products.”

Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) declared on Twitter, “Oh look, it’s the sound of me Googling ‘how to make your own Adobo.”

Failed Democratic presidential candidate Julian Castro tweeted, “@GoyaFoods has been a staple of so many Latino households for generations. Now their CEO, Bob Unanue, is praising a president who villainizes and maliciously attacks Latinos for political gain. Americans should think twice before buying their products. #Goyaway”

Immigrant youth organization United We Dream put out a statement saying, “We don’t support companies who endorse and comply with a White Supremacist regime. Under capitalism, know the power of the dollar in their eyes. We’re using it to make a statement. Pledge your commitment to boycotting Goya Foods today.”

By evening, “Goya” was the top trending word on Twitter, along with the hashtags #BoycottGoya and #Goyaway.

According to Goya Foods‘ website, the company was founded by Spanish immigrants Don and Carolina Prudencio Unanue in 1936, and is currently “the largest Hispanic-owned food company in the United States.”

The congressman from New York says the gun control legislation is ‘timely now’

Republican Rep. Peter King (N.Y.) on Monday signed on to the Assault Weapons Ban of 2019, becoming the first GOP House member to co-sponsor the legislation backed by 200 Democrats.

What are the details?

The bill, H.R. 1296, “makes it a crime to knowingly import, sell, transfer, or possess a semiautomatic assault weapons (SAW) or large capacity ammunition feeding device (LCAFD).

Congressman King told the New York Daily News that such firearms “are weapons of mass slaughter,” and he “doesn’t see any need for them in everyday society.”

While the New York Republican had already been considering signing on to the legislation — which was proposed by Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) back in February — King said , “I think the assault weapons ban is timely now, especially in view of the shooting in El Paso and Dayton.”

King also said that he hoped his move would encourage more of his colleagues on both sides of the aisle to join him in backing the ban, adding, “It might give cover to some other Republicans, it might give some incentive to Democrats.”

Cicilline praised King for signing on to the legislation, telling the Daily News, “These weapons belong on the battlefield, not in our homes, schools, houses of worship or workplaces. I’m pleased that Congressman King has joined this effort. I sincerely hope that more of my Republican colleagues will put their service to our country and the safety of their constituents ahead of their need to raise campaign money from the gun lobby.”

The Hill reported that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has promised to block such legislation in the Republican-led upper chamber, and President Donald Trump has “expressed opposition to the bill.”

Anything else?

Rep. King has sponsored a number of gun control proposals in the past, as noted by Newsday, and the GOP congressman has an “F” rating from the National Rifle Association.

The Democratic leadership in the House has a decision to make

A Democratic congressman filed articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump late Tuesday night, forcing the House of Representatives to schedule a vote on the move.

All eyes are now on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) — who opposes immediate impeachment proceedings — to see how leadership will handle the matter.

What are the details?

Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) filed the articles of impeachment in reaction to recent comments President Trump made on Twitter regarding four progressive congresswomen. Trump suggested Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (Minn.), Ayanna Pressley (Mass.), and Rashida Tlaib (Mich.) “go back” to the countries they “originally came from.”

All of the women are American citizens, and three of them were born in the U.S. The president’s tweets drew widespread condemnation, but he denied having any racist intentions behind his comments.

While the Democrat-led House passed a resolution (amid chaos) condemning the president’s comments on Tuesday, Pelosi has long maintained that she is opposed to pursuing impeachment proceedings against the president until ongoing congressional investigations involving his administration have concluded.

She confirmed to Politico on Wednesday that she does not support Green’s move, which is being forced because it is a privileged motion and can be introduced by any member.

House leadership now has a decision to make. An impeachment-related vote is expected to occur as early as 4 p.m. Wednesday, and they may opt to proceed with the resolution, table it, or send it off to committee.

In the instance that the resolution is directed to committee or tabled, Pelosi risks angering an already rebellious progressive wing of her divided caucus, which has been emboldened by the furor over President Trump’s tweets.

But if Pelosi brings it to the floor for a vote, she faces risks whether it passes or fails, because either scenario could result in the resolution’s ultimate demise. Knowing this, Republicans might even vote against tabling the motion or sending the resolution to committee in order to force an up-or-down vote.

If impeachment passes in the House, any attempts to remove the president from office is likely destined for failure given the likelihood that the GOP-led Senate would not vote to convict.

If it fails in the House, many would see it as a rebuke of far-left Democrats who are focused on removing Trump from the White House and as a major political victory for a president who is in the throes of a reelection bid.

Anything else?

Rep. Green has been chomping at the bit to see President Trump ousted from office. The Texas congressman twice presented articles of impeachment against the president, according to Politico, but his previous attempts stopped by the then-Republican majority in the House.

Green believes now is the time to make his move after the House condemnation of the president, despite pushback from his party’s leadership. He told CNN Wednesday, “As a result of what we did yesterday, the president suffers no harm, he doesn’t have to pay any fine, he’s not going to lose his job. But today, we have the opportunity to punish.”

The network’s viewership numbers dwarfed those of its competition during the July 4 event

It appears Fox News’ decision to offer a two-hour special covering President Donald Trump’s “Salute to America” celebration on July 4 has apparently paid off, as evidenced by viewership breaking two network records and dominating the ratings.

What are the details?

Fox reported that during the president’s speech from 6:30-7:30 p.m. ET, the outlet averaged 4.6 million viewers — its largest ever July 4 prime-time audience — more than double the viewers of CNN and MSNBC’s coverage combined, at 1.5 million and a “dismal” 374,000, respectively.

The telecast was also the most-watched show of 2019 for Fox News’ “Special Report.”

Ahead of the Independence Day fanfare, major networks ABC, CBS, and NBC all announced they would not provide live television coverage of President Trump’s speech, opting instead to stick with regularly scheduled shows like “Jeopardy!” and “Inside Edition.”

According to The Hill, NBC did air live coverage of New York City’s prime-time fireworks show, but drew only 3.8 million viewers.

In more good news for Fox News, President Trump announced Monday that he plans to throw a similar Fourth of July party in 2020.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, the president said, “It was a wonderful day for all Americans and based on its tremendous success, we’re just making the decision and I think we can say we’ve made the decision to do it again next year. And maybe we can say for the foreseeable future.”

Anything else?

Although CNN did air the president’s “Salute to America” speech live, the network’s pundits have been criticized for their coverage of the event. Curtis Houck, managing editor of Media Research Center’s Newsbusters, wrote afterward that “CNN’s ‘The Situation Room’ put on one of the most disgraceful displays of liberal media bias, Trump hatred, and slights at America you’ll ever see.”

Houck noted, “A cast of CNN personalities bashed the Trump speech as a ‘rudimentary’ ‘eighth grade history’ report ripping off ‘Schoolhouse Rock’ and Wikipedia to create a work of ‘jingoism and militaristic virtue.'”

The former Texas congressman called on his fellow Americans to ‘make this right’

Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke made a campaign stop in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, over the weekend, where he held a roundtable discussion with asylum-seekers from Central America to hear their concerns over U.S. immigration policies.

What are the details?

The former Texas congressman staged a sit-down with residents of a migrant shelter, who complained of being denied entry into the U.S. until their asylum claims have been processed.

O’Rourke highlighted some of their stories in a Facebook message following the meeting, and said in a livestream video, “We hope, by sharing these stories, that the conscience of our country is awoken right now, and the need to change the policies that we have in place” becomes apparent, The Associated Press reported.

O’Rourke added in his post, “The wealthiest, the most powerful country on the face of the planet is turning these families away from a land comprised of refugees and asylum-seekers the world over. This can’t be us. This can’t be America. But right now, it’s America and it’s on all of us to make this right.

“We must end the Remain in Mexico policy, end metering, end family separation, and end the detention of those who pose absolutely no threat,” the Democrat continued. “But we must go far beyond that and fix the entire system.”

This isn’t O’Rourke’s first meeting with migrants housed in Ciudad Juarez, which is across the border from El Paso, Texas. O’Rourke held a similar sit-down there in December, prior to announcing his candidacy for president, the AP noted. He told a group of Guatemalan migrants during that visit, “We’re here to understand your story and to see how we can help you seek asylum in our country.”

Anything else?

In O’Rourke’s plan for reforming the U.S. immigration system, he accuses the Trump administration of “manufacturing crises” and promises that as president, O’Rourke would “immediately halt work on the border wall — and his first budget, and every budget, will include zero dollars for this unnecessary wall.”

O’Rourke believes U.S. taxpayer dollars would be better spent in Latin American countries, and has proposed “investing $5 billion in the region primarily through non-governmental organizations, community groups (such as Municipal Crime Prevention Committees) and congregations, and public-private partnerships.”
