UFC fighter Colby Covington had a message of support for first responders after his weekend win and also criticized “woke athletes” such as LeBron James for being “spineless cowards.”
“I want to dedicate this fight to all the first responders, all the military out there,” Covington said. “This world would not be safe without you guys.”
“You keep us safe … not these woke athletes,” he continued. “I’m sick of these woke athletes and these spineless cowards like LeBron James.”

Covington, who has been a vocal supporter of President Trump, also had words of support for the president after his victory.
“Ladies and gentleman, the silent majority is ready to make some noise. If you thought that was a beating wait until November 3rd, when Donald Trump gets his hands on Sleepy Joe. That’s gonna be a landslide,” Covington said.

Covington’s public comments stand in contrast to athletes in other leagues who have embraced social justice causes in the wake of George Floyd’s death while he was in police custody in Minneapolis. Many of those athletes, including James, have followed in the footsteps of NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s protests of the national anthem.
“Kap was someone who stood up when times weren’t comfortable,” James said of his national anthem protest. “When people didn’t understand … it had absolutely nothing to do about the flag, he explained that and people never listened. I did! We just thank him for sacrificing everything that he did.”
Covington defeated rival fighter Tyron Woodley on Saturday, improving his record to 16-2. After the matchup, he received a congratulatory call from Trump during his interview.
“You are a great fighter, man. I’ll tell you,” Trump said. “You make it so easy, I don’t know how the hell you do it.”
“Thank you so much Mr. President. You gave me the dragon energy when you shook my hand on Sunday at your rally,” Covington replied. “It doesn’t matter if King Kong was in front of me, I was not going to lose after getting to shake your hand and be at your rally.”
“I’m proud of you man,” Trump added. “I’m a big fan and I’m proud of you. You’re tough, you have the right spirit.”
